NEURODEVELOPMENTAL DISORDERS
The term neurodevelopmental disorder is fairly new in developmental medicine and related fields. It refers to a group of difficulties wherein there are gaps, delays or variations in the way a child’s brain develops. It can be caused by genetic, environmental, or unspecified reasons, many of which are not yet known. We do know however that these dysfunctions often interfere with learning, behavior and adaptability across environments. Neurodevelopmental problems affect one out of every 20 children.

Because of the brain disruption which is at the root of all neurodevelopmental disorders, there are several common features across the variety of disorders in this group. Some of these include difficulties with motor development, sensory integration difficulties, speech and language delays and a range of cognitive difficulties including learning disabilities, poor organizational skills, poor self regulation and behavioral difficulties.

The types of problems are numerous and wide-ranging. For a listing of known neurodevelopmental disorders please follow this link: http://www.kennedykrieger.org/kki_2nd_inside.jsp?pid=3
